Who is Imran Khan?
Imran Khan (born 5 October 1952) is a Pakistani politician and former cricketer who is the 22nd and former current Prime Minister of Pakistan, in office since 18 August 2018. He played international cricket for two decades in the late twentieth century and, after retiring, entered politics. A firebrand nationalist, he is the founder and leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
Born in Lahore to a Pashtun family, Khan was educated at Aitchison, Worcester, and later at the Keble College, Oxford. He started playing cricket at an early age and represented his college and Pakistan U-19s before making his debut for the Pakistan cricket team in 1971. Khan quickly became a star player and captained Pakistan to victory at the 1992 Cricket World Cup, Pakistan's first and only victory in that tournament. He played until 1992 and retired from cricket after the 1999 Pakistan tour of England. Khan entered politics in 1996 and founded the PTI that same year. He was elected to the National Assembly in 2002 and served as the opposition leader from 2008 to 2018. His party won a plurality in the 2018 general election, and he took office as Prime Minister of Pakistan on 18 August 2018. As Prime Minister, Khan has faced challenges in dealing with Pakistan's economy and the country's relations with Afghanistan and India. No confidence motion and removal from office
On 8 March 2022, opposition parties submitted a motion of no confidence against him to the National Assembly's secretariat. On 1 April 2022, Prime Minister Khan announced that in context of the no-confidence motion against him in the National Assembly, the "establishment" had given him three options to choose from viz: "resignation, no-confidence [vote] or elections".
On 3 April 2022, while addressing the Nation Imran Khan announced that he had advised the President of Pakistan to dissolve the National Assembly of Pakistan. On dissolution of the National Assembly of Pakistan a circular issued by the government declared that Imran Khan had ceased to hold the office of Prime Minister of Pakistan. This culminated in a constitutional crisis, as according to article 224 (A) of the Pakistani constitution, an incumbent prime minister continues to hold the office of Prime Minister on an interim basis until a caretaker prime minister is appointed.
On 10 April, a no-confidence vote was conducted and he was ousted from office, becoming the first prime minister in Pakistan to be removed from office by a vote of no confidence.
